Chapter two
Autumn’s cool breeze was a welcome sign after the heat of the past summer. Some days the heat was nearly unbearable which was sometimes the case in this part of the country. In the summer with days were less productive many would take a break and only work late into the night and early morning because that’s when you could be more productive.. I scurried outside early that morning. My first order of the day was a visit to the out house then off to the chicken coup. I popped through the chicken door, I was the only one small enough in our family to do that, and I took to collecting the eggs the hens had laid. “Hey Gracie ,heya Helen, Where is Crystal? “ Crystal always hides her eggs some where. I was just glad that they stayed in the coop last night,it’s a pain to run around the yard looking for all the eggs. Your sure to miss a few and man they get rank when you find them later. Eight all together that was a good deal. I walked up to the back porch where my mother was still sitting from the night before. I could hear her dove like snoring as I approached. Stretching out I landed a kiss on her cheek and she smiled and said “did you wash them off? Go fetch some water dear.” She must have eyes in the back of her head. I still don’t know how she knew what I was doing even when she was asleep. Putting the eggs in a bowl I strolled out to the water pump and set to task washing them off before I filled the bucket with water and precarious waddled back to the kitchen. My mother was already up and starting to fix breakfast when my sisters wondered in rubbing their eyes and cackling worse than the hens. “You have to stop letting Robert walk you home.” Gertrude squawk. Cheryl rolled her eyes. “Mom tell Gertie to mind her own beeswax.” “Girls set the table I am going to need some help here. Your brother has to get going early.” Honey will you go wake your brothers up.” Mother never payed much attention to those two, they were always trying to tell each other what to do. I trotted on into my brothers room and dove between Joey and Hal. “Hey who the! Oh it’s you.” Hal said surprisingly. “ Mom said I should tell you two to come to breakfast “

I rolled on top of Joey ,he was my oldest brother the one that taught me how to play baseball . I looked him in his squinting eyes. “ Do you want to catch after work? “ I was staring intensely at him now.” Of course I always would want to Jinny but I may have to stay late for some accounting clarifications. “ I must have looked disappointed as I slid from the bed. “ Oh hell maybe I can wiggle out of it today. I tell them my kid sister needs me to play catch and they will let me go early.” I looked back at Joey and sneared ,” I wouldn’t buy your slider if I was the umpire I would call it a ball.” I squintin at him as I left the room. . “ Ouch she got you there big brother you taught her to well. “ Hal added as he dragged his comb through his perfect hair. It was always perfect even when he slept. “ Let’s get going”.Mom called with her dove like voice from the kitchen
